Is Your Organization 508 Compliant?

Disability inclusive communications and marketing strategies are a key component of any organization’s outreach efforts. Over 26 percent of the current United States population lives with a disability. Some disabilities can present challenges accessing organizational communications that are not formatted in an accessible manner. Organizations can improve the accessibility of their communications by becoming 508 Compliant. Understanding what is required under Section 508, along with strategies to improve disability inclusion within the organization, is important for business, community, government, and nonprofit leaders.

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. § 794d) requires federal agencies to develop, procure, maintain and use information and communications technology (ICT) that is accessible to people with disabilities. ICT includes a wide variety of communications tools and platforms, including digital files, internal documents, graphic design, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, and websites. Section 508 Compliance requirements extend to government agencies (federal and some state agencies) and non-government organizations that work with the government.
